Sri Ananthashayana Temple
The Sri Ananthashayana Temple , also known as the Ananthashayana Devaru Temple, is a renowned Hindu temple located in Ananthapura , Karnataka. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his form as Ananthashayana , which means “the one who sleeps eternally.” The Vishnu in reclining form represents the Anantha (the serpent with infinite coils), symbolising cosmic balance and eternal existence.
History and Mythology
One of the ancient sites of worship, the temple is dated back to the 9th century. According to Indian mythology, it’s the place where Lord Vishnu rested here after his efforts to preserve the Universe.
Architecture
The temple shows the elements of Dravidian style with intricate carvings and a serene pond nearby. In temple premises, a significant water body or tank within the temple enhances the premises. At the Garbhgriha , the central idol of Lord Vishnu in reclining form rests by the side of Lakshmi.

Vaikuntha Ekadashi: At this time , many devotees come to seek the blessing of the deity, Vishnu.
Daily Poojas : Regular rituals are performed to honour the deity, including Abhisheka and Alankara .
Annual Rathotsava (Chariot Festival) : A grand procession in a beautifully decorated chariot is organised at the temple.
