Geography

History

Hampi was the glorious capital of the Vijayanagara Empire (14th–16th centuries)—one of the richest and largest kingdoms in Indian history. European travelers described it as more splendid than Rome and richer than any city in the East. After being attacked in 1565, the city was abandoned, leaving behind spectacular ruins that still stand as a testament to its former grandeur.

Today, Hampi is an open-air museum of temples, bazaars, water tanks, royal buildings, and fortifications, each telling a story of the empire’s cultural and architectural brilliance.
